All-Ability Playground at C.W. Longer Elementary, Hollidaysburg, PA

                Picture
ZHF's first project is the creation of an All-Ability Playground, located at CW Longer Elementary in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.  Zack was a kindergarten student at CWL.  He was also a part of the Multiple Disabilities Support classroom.  Zack (like most of his MDS classmates) used a wheelchair as his main method of mobility.  The existing playground at the school was not accessible for Zack or any of his classmates, so they had no appropriate place to play during recess.

The new playground consists of 3 12' ramps, which will allow children that use wheelchairs or walkers access to the majority of the play equipment.  The playground will be used by children with and without disabilities - and has lots of fun play events for everyone.  The playground surface is a poured rubber material, which will allow for easy mobility for wheelchairs and walkers.  The playground also has a Sway-Fun Glider - a large swing that accomodates 2 wheelchairs plus 8 other children.  What a fantastic way to promote inclusion and playing together!

The project budget was $200,000.  As of 7/1/11, the Zack Hinish Foundation raised enough money to start the project through individual and business donations, as well as grants.  Engraved bricks are still available for purchase.  Please contact Tami Hinish for more information - (814) 696-5028.  The construction was completedJuly 27, 28, 29 and 30.  Over 40 volunteers showed up each day to help build.  It was an amazing experience for all that were involved!
